In practice, an example would be like this (it just needs to be put in the ass file - a functioning example attached, just rename it so that the extension is. but it is fairly easy to make a script that makes a another subtitle with the same duration, transparent text and semitransparent background, with slightly larger font size and slightly lower vertical margin (in case the alignment is 2, bottom center) one layer below the existing subtitle, which should have no borderstyle set to 0, 1 or 2 (0, that is not borders and no shadow and no box looks best to me). Hm, this can be overcome, actually, if it is still a hack. I understand that things like this could be solved through ASS v5.0 #267 but that does not seem happening. However, introducing support for a new value of Borderstyle (and its correct rendering) would not break backwards compatibility and would solve this issue. Apparently, this is a legacy of the ASS specs. I asked at the aegisub forums: and they forwarded me here. (I attach a screenshot demonstrating the issue, ass file is copypasted below since I could not uplaod it as an attachment). Libass supports opaque bozes very well and semi-transparent bozes with one line subtitles are just fine as well.
Some people including me (see here: ) would like to be able to put subtitles into semitransparent boxes.
